I have mentioned the use of social media in educational environments several times over the last several weeks. It should be clear, at this point, that I see merit and potential in the use of social media as an instructional tool. It can provide a level of engagement, connectivity and collaboration for students with little effort or resources required. Such benefits are hard to match with other tools.
My problem is that I do not really see a good use for social media in our social culture. Perhaps this would be more accurately stated is I said that I do not see social media being used for good. Instead, social media has become another accessory that individuals use to send the world a message the same as we do with our wardrobe or car. What is the message being sent though?
Most often, these sites become status symbols in which “friends” which aren’t friends are collected and individuals promote how popular and connected they are or to do and say things they might filter if done in person. I also feel these sites dilute the interactions between people who might otherwise develop true friendships.
I believe the use of social media sites will evolve over time. Either users will become disillusioned and dissatisfied with the pseudo relationships available and the social media sites will become the venue for second class and distance relationships or the online relationships will prove satisfying and a cultural shift will result.
I can appreciate what you have said, but I personally believe that social media will not go away, but will morph into something else. Many people live for drama in their lives and to see it in the lives of others. I am not saying it is right. Most social media I believe is either gossip or is people being vain enough that they think that everyone wants to hear about their problems and issues. I do believe that if used correctly it can be a valuable teaching tool. We can't do anything about social media, so why not use it constructively where we can. :)
ReplyDeleteDavid, Your post shows you are looking hard to find some good in social media, but seem to come up empty when you are looking for depth in these. While many are just showcasing and offering vapid commentary, some can use these media for maintaining ties with others and following closely in times of crisis. Social media may not be fabulous but they do offer some sort of connection than can be personal when you actually know the person. If we are seeking contact instead of “hornblowing”, there can be some good come from them.

David, I can see Social Media being used in an educational environment such as our class because it can be a learning tool, however I agree with you that it is now being used not only for good but has now opened up a new world to bullying. There has to be some control at some point but like everything else in the worls what is good can be bad. This opens n.thedoor for the devil to step i
